During this global pandemic the mental fatigue and stress that families are experiencing is at an all time high. I would love to be allowed to safely work with my clients in your hospital. I believe the presence of a doula greatly increases patient satisfaction surrounding their birth experience. I believe that being allowed back in and partnering with your team at the hospital will help reduce the stress and fear that these families are facing as they bring new life into this world.
The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal released the following statement in regard to doulas and COVID-19: “AWHONN recognizes that doula services contribute to the woman’s preparation for and support during childbirth and opposes hospital policies that restrict the presence of a doula during a woman’s active labor.” *Please see attached letter from DONA International.
As a doula, I am happy to sign a form agreeing to abide by safety rules that are deemed important, such as wearing an N-95 face mask during labor and birth. I am happy to provide this item myself. I am also happy to sign a form stating that I understand that I will not come to the hospital if I think I have been exposed to COVID-19. I am also happy to be tested along with my clients prior to their birth if that is needed to allow me to physically support them.
Doulas are currently allowed to accompany and support clients at Mission Hospital and the WNC Birth Center. We follow the protocols put in place by the management of each healthcare provider. Please consider welcoming doulas back onto the floor at Advent Health.
I appreciate the time that you have taken to read my letter. I would happily set up an interview or Zoom call to continue the conversation on how doulas can safely be reinstated at The Baby Place supporting clients.
